How to Install WordPress Themes and Plugins from GitHub

In one of our previous post, we talked about Github being one of the sources where you can see plugins and themes to install in WordPress. Today, we want to talk about how you can install both plugins and themes from theme and even get update from anytime they are made available.

What Is Github…?

Github is a project hosting website. It hosts an open-source project and it is free to use, you can also go for their paid subscription or plan if you want to host a private project with them. It is the most popular hosting service among open-source programmers or developers. It also offers a taste of social platforms, by allowing you to follow other users, give star ratings to projects and even subscribe to project in order to know any updates about them. Another typical example is Stack overflow.

Before you begin to download plugins and themes from Github, you have to make sure you are able to receive updates for the plugin or the themes downloaded.

How to get Updates

Just know that WordPress looks for, and receives an update on both themes and plugins by looking into the theme’s or plugin’s read me file and their header file, which usually contain the information about the latest version that is stable. though, this does not mean that WordPress will show the need for update automatically for these plugins and themes you downloaded from the GitHub repository. Developers of those plugins must make sure they include the code which will enable your WordPress-powered site to receive updates.

Another way is to install and activate the GitHub update plugin. This plugin enables you to get updates for plugins and themes downloaded from Github.

And sometimes you might have to contact the developers of those plugins and themes and ask them about the update of the plugins and themes you download from their Github repository.
